Android beta

Be one of the first on wya

wya is on Google Play as a closed test. Getting in takes two taps and about a minute — here is exactly how.

Android for now. iPhone is right below.

Three steps

From here to installed

Do them in order — step 2 cannot work before step 1 has gone through. Then leave wya installed: Google only lets an app go public once enough testers have stayed in for 14 days straight.

About a minute

One account, all the way through

The Google account you join the group with has to be the account your phone uses for the Play Store. A different one is by far the most common reason the test link claims you are not a tester.

  1. Join the tester group

The tester list is a Google group. Open it, tap Join group, and you are on the list. Members are hidden from each other and we never post to it.

    Join the tester group

Join with the same Google account your phone uses for the Play Store.

  2. Accept the test on Google Play

This link is what turns your account into a tester account. Open it, sign in if Play asks, and tap Become a tester.

    Become a tester

Just joined the group? Give it a few minutes. Until it goes through, this page says the test is not available.

  3. Install wya

Open the listing on your Android phone and install it like any other app. If Play still says it is unavailable, wait a few minutes and reload.

    Open wya on Google Play

On a computer? Open this page on your phone — the install has to happen there.

iPhone

iOS runs on TestFlight

Same idea, Apple’s version. TestFlight is Apple’s app for beta builds: install it, open our invite, and wya lands on your home screen. No group to join.

One mail when the iPhone build opens. Nothing else, ever.

Before you ask

The questions everyone asks

Is it finished?

It is the app we are shipping, a few weeks early. Things move around and some of them break. That is what you are here for.

What happens to my email address?

It goes on the Play tester list and nowhere else. Google never tells us what you install, and we never send anything to the group. The privacy policy covers the rest.

How long am I signed up for?

As long as you like. We ask for two weeks because that is the run Google counts before the app can go public.

How do I leave?

Open the same test link and tap Leave the programme, then uninstall. No hard feelings — but if you can tell us why, that is worth more to us than the slot.

Play says I am not a tester.

Almost always one of two things: the group join has not propagated yet, or the browser is signed in to a different Google account than your phone. Wait a few minutes, then check the account shown at the top of the Play page.

Does it cost anything?

No. wya is free and so is the test. There is nothing to pay and nothing to cancel.

Something is broken. Where do I say so?

Write to us. A screenshot and one line about what you were doing is plenty.

Stuck somewhere?

Send us the address you are trying to use and we will put you on the list by hand.
